A Busy Bee Sat on a Bushel of Blossoms
Drawing Installation by Nicole Baumann
At Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
An exhibit by Nicole Baumann will be on view from May 9 – July 5, 2009 in Ginter Gallery II located in the Education and Library Complex at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. A drawing installation composed of colored vinyl will sprawl through part of the gallery, complimented by a selection of framed artworks that combine drawing and embroidery. The artist will greet visitors in the gallery Saturday, May 23, from 6 – 8 pm.
Nicole’s collages are a playful mix of imaginative whimsy and nature. Attached directly to the wall, the drawings have a lively rhythm to their composition. Her delicate line drawings are created with embroidery thread sewn through paper. Soft colors are enhanced by bright punctuations, leading the eye to dance across the animated composition. Nicole is motivated by memories, relationships, nostalgia, and the natural world. “The recollection of familiar scenes and sentiments allows the imagination to interpolate information that may be missing as a result of passing time, thus causing a past experience to be corrupted by recollection. What may seem like just yesterday is often filtered and transformed by emotion and personal experience. This leads us to question why certain aspects of personal experience and place are more prominent than others, and do these aspects stand out physically, psychologically, or both?” Nicole focuses on fleeting glimpses of recollection in order to complete a memory.
